Have your own slice of tropical paradise in Nitmiluk National Park. Often overlooked by visitors to the Top End, it is a magical place where you can imagine yourself completely alone. A labyrinth of 13 gorges, with plunging waterfalls and warm thermal springs. Hike along the rim and bathe in picturesque surroundings. Kayak the depths of the gorge on a multiday trip, or fly over it. Whatever you choose to put into the mix, you will be guaranteed the perfect blend of the Outback and the tropics.
Where should you visit Nitmiluk National Park?
Welcome to Nitmiluk National Park
Nitmiluk National Park is in the Northern Territory, 23 kilometres northeast of the town of Katherine. It is a popular stopover when travelling between Darwin, 244 kilometres northwest of the park, and Alice Springs in the Red Centre. The park's biggest attraction is Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge), a spectacular system of 13 gorges stretching for 12 kilometres. Carved by the mighty Katherine River over hundreds of years, it offers some of the most stunning gorge scenery in the Northern Territory.
There are two main sections to the park, with a 90km drive between the 2 sections: Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge to the south and Leliyn (Edith Falls) to the north.
Indigenous culture
The diverse and spectacular landscape of Nitmiluk is where the Jawoyn people live. As the traditional owners of the land, they have been co-managing the park with the Australian government. Nitmiluk is steeped in Jawoyn Aboriginal culture, which continues as Jawoyn people look after Nitmiluk’s diverse natural values and maintain and share their rich culture with the community and visitors. Jawoyn rock art sites dot the park and include some very ancient, as well as more recent, styles and motifs.
The first Indigenous actors
An influential Australian film, Jedda the Uncilivised (1955) was filmed in this region. This movie is significant because it was the first film to star two Aboriginal actors. It was also the first Australian feature film to be shot in colour.
Things to see and do in Nitmiluk National Park
Best time to visit
Nitmiluk Gorge has a tropical climate. The best time to visit the area is in the Dry season (May - September) when you can enjoy warm, sunny days. The downside is that it may be too hot for hiking or walking, but if you plan it well and leave at dawn, you can still enjoy these activities.
During the rainy season, the normally gentle river turns into a raging stream through the gorges, with wild waterfalls cascading down the cliffs. While this offers some stunning scenery, it may impede water based activities due to water levels being too high. It is also very hot and humid during this time of the year.
