Cycle the Tongariro River Trail

Explore the pristine surroundings of Lake Taupo, New Zealand’s largest freshwater lake by bike. Taupo is located on the north side of Lake Taupo, a crater formed during the world’s largest volcanic eruption. The small town is an ideal base from which to explore this volcanic region.

The Tongariro River Trail is a family-friendly grade 2 trail and a half-day experience which suits the children too. Take it easy, cycle at a relaxed pace and enjoy a family day out! You will cycle through native bush, across swing bridges and along the banks of Tongariro River - home to hundreds of trout.

Stop for a visit at the National Trout Centre and after your cycle, treat yourself to a bite to eat or a refreshing drink at one of the cafes around Turangi. Mountain bikes and helmets are provided, with suitable sizes for each family member.

Finished cycling for the day? Have a soak in the natural hot pools, visit the impressive Huka Falls - waterfalls in which more than 220,000 litres per second fall over the cliff into the depth or go trout fishing in the Tongariro River.
