Join a historic-guided tour exploring the coal mining towns in the area of the Denniston Plateau. Here, underground miners toiled extracting high quality coal. There are many amazing relics from the mining era too. Denniston is an area rich in history, unusual landforms and outstanding scenery.
- Visit the coal plateau high above the coastal flats
- The tour lasts for 5 hours
- Treat yourself to mesmerising views of the coast
Just a 20-minute drive north from Westport, you'll find yourself at Conns Creek, nestled in the breathtaking Waimangaroa River gorge. As you reach Denniston, perched at a cool 600 metres above sea level, take a moment to explore the remnants of its coal mining history and delve into fascinating stories through informative panels atop the Denniston Incline. Cast your gaze down the incline towards Conns Creek, and you'll be awed by the steep gradient.
Drive through the echoes of Denniston's past
Embark on a short stroll through lush woods that lead to a clearing, revealing the Banbury Arch—a man-made marvel of the old rope road. Driving through the echoes of Denniston's past, you'll witness a town that was once thriving with a bustling population of 2,000 residents a century ago, including adjacent settlements like Burnett's Face and Coalbrookdale. Although the plateau is now home to just a handful of residents, your next stop, the Friends of the Hill museum, keeps the vibrant history alive. Enjoy a delightful lunch and immerse yourself in even more tales from Denniston's heyday.
Your journey continues across the rocky sandstone plateau
Leaving the museum behind, your journey continues across the rocky sandstone plateau, offering glimpses of the extensive underground mines below. The trusty Unimog vehicle then conquers the ascent to Mt Rochfort, standing tall at 1040 meters above sea level. From this vantage point, prepare to be amazed by panoramic vistas of the coastal beauty below and the rugged eastern mountains. As you bid farewell to Mt Rochfort, your path retraces across the plateau and winds down the escarpment, finally returning you to Westport, completing your adventure 45 minutes later.
