Cycle the Otago Rail Trail

Deep in the South Island is the region of Central Otago. This region holds the driest climate in the South Island. Featuring a vast brown landscape, snow-capped mountains, crystal blue rivers, deep gorges and tussock-clad hills. Vineyards are scattered throughout, this is where New Zealand’s best Pinot Noir is produced.

But, before you can treat yourself to a glass of wine each night, you will be cycling the famous Otago Rail Trail. A multi-day adventure, cycling an old 152-kilometre railway line through farmland, past rocky outcrops, lakes and historic gold mines.

In the 1860s, this region was booming with gold, but today the gold has been switched with wine. Your travel specialist will design a tailor-made trip with the help from a local guide and yourself. There are plenty of options to choose from.

Maybe you want to soak up the landscape in Omakau or Ophir. Visit historic bridges at Manuherikia and Cape Burn or cycle the longest gorge of the trail - Poolburn Gorge. You will cycle between 40 and 50 kilometres each day. All gear will be provided and different boutique accommodation is organised for each night.
