Go stargazing in a dark sky reserve

Be fascinated by the starry night sky in the heart of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. The 4300 square kilometre area is the Southern Hemisphere’s only dark sky reserve. The clear nights and lack of light pollution make for a magnificent sight.

Join your enthusiastic guide on a short drive to the Mount John Observatory. View the objects and constellations visible in the sky to the naked eye, before using binoculars and telescopes.

You will have the chance to see the Southern Cross, Milky Way, Alpha-Centauri - our nearest neighbour, 4.3 light-years away and Sirius, the brightest star in the sky. Learn about the nearest galaxies and the Magellanic Clouds. US Antarctic Expedition jackets will be supplied to keep you warm.
