Central Otago was booming with gold in the 1860s, today the gold has been replaced with wine. This region holds the driest climate in the South Island. Featuring a vast brown landscape, snow-capped mountains, crystal blue rivers, deep gorges and tussock-clad hills. With vineyards scattered throughout, it’s the perfect place to go vineyard hopping!
As well as tasting wine, the region has plenty of action-packed activities to choose from. The 152-kilometre Central Otago Rail Trail is impressive. Following an old railway, you can soak up the spectacular landscape, cycling from station to station. Or feel a little spine-tingle with a cruise down Clutha River on a jet boat.
