Explore a fascinating underground maze

Hidden under the rolling hills of Waitomo lies a fascinating underground maze of caves, rivers and sinkholes. The Waitomo Glowworm Caves have been millions of years in the making. Thousands of glistening glowworms radiating luminescent light.

Venture into the caves with an experienced guide, and learn about the rich history and geological significance of the caves. Cruise along the underground river onboard a purpose-built boat and be mesmerized by your surroundings.

The Waitomo Caves were first explored by Maori Chief Tane Tinorau and Brit Fred Mace in 1887. They built a flax raft, floated through the caves by candlelight, and in 1889 it was opened for visitors.
